In 1942, after struggling with problems that were unimaginable, costs that were horrendous, and obstacles which seemed to be insurmountable,

Canada and the United States of America completed the Alaska Highway linking the two countries together. Most of the work was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers because it was thought that the road would be necessary for military purposes.
The building of this road had been in the minds of Canadians and Americans for some time, and work on the highway had just begun when the bombing of Pearl Harbor gave a sense of urgency to the project.
Amid swarms of mosquitoes, workers labored to construct the all-weather road over bottomless bogs, through dense forests and across rivers and mountain ranges. Despite these difficulties, this mighty task was completed in just eight months and twelve days.
Traveling this road can still present a challenge. The road begins at Mile 0 at Dawson Creek, British Colombia and ends at Fairbanks, Alaska. But how easy the 2,451 km trip is today compared to the labour and difficulties that were encountered a century ago!
The Bible says, “A highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray” (Isaiah 35:8).
This highway that Isaiah spoke of had been in the mind of God for eternity – a way that sinful mankind could find the way back to God. Like the Alaska Highway, it was completed at great cost. However, those who benefit from this road do not have to bear the cost. The price was paid by God when He sent His only beloved Son to die at Calvary.
If we travel the Alaska Highway today, we do so because of the work and suffering and even the lives of others. And so it is for us spiritually. If we travel the narrow road that leads to Heaven, we do so because of the suffering, death and resurrection of the Saviour.
The “Mile 0” from which the road to Heaven begins is the cross of Jesus Christ. It is only by accepting Him as our Saviour and Lord that we can begin this journey.
Won’t you trust the Saviour and start on the road to Heaven today?
