Where are you?

“The trouble with ordinary maps is they don’t know where you are.”

While I was browsing through a magazine in my doctor’s office, the above heading in an advertisement caught my eye.

It reminded me of some friends who were fishing on the Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada. After a very pleasant day of fishing and boating around the many islands and channels in that large lake, they had no idea where they were. They had no cell service, so their smart phone map app was of no assistance. They found a printed map in the bottom of the boat’s cubby, but it was of little value to them as they couldn’t recognize any land features. They had to ask another fisherman to show them where they were on their map. Then following the map, they soon found their way home.

The advertisement went on to describe the company’s Global Positioning System receiver. By way of satellite, this receiver not only shows the lay of the land but also indicates your position. With this information, you can begin to move towards your destination.

In a spiritual sense, we are all on the journey of life, but many of us don’t know where we are. We are travelling on the road to eternity with only two possible destinations, Heaven or Hell. Like the fisherman, we need someone to locate our present position.

Just as GPS provides a way for the user to find his or her present location so, in the spiritual realm, the Bible can show us where we are in our relationship with God. In the book of Matthew we read, “Broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it…Narrow is the gate…which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

We are all on the broad way leading to destruction. It is only when we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour from the awful penalty of our sin that we enter the narrow gate leading to Heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Are you travelling on the broad way or have you found the narrow gate leading to eternal life?
